Hotaru has a sheltered, lonely, fragile character. She lives in isolation with her father, Professor Tomoe, who, after a lab accident, gave up his soal to an evil entity to save his daugter's life. Under the control of the entity, he cultivated Hotaru so that another entity could take over her body. It isn't until much later that Mistress 9 enters her body in preparation for Master Pharoah 90's coming and destruction of the world.
Sailor Saturn, the soldier of death and rebirth. She is the wielder of the deadly Silence Glaive and extreme destructive power.
Sailor Saturn first appeared during the destruction of the Silver Millenium. When Queen Metallia attacked the Moon, the 3 talismans held by Uranus, Neptune & Pluto combined their energies, giving birth to "the final [planetary] senshi" with the power to annihilate a hopeless realm: Sailor Saturn. Saturn's appearance signaled the end of the Silver Millenium, and the 3 outer senshi could do nothing as Saturn silenced the era of the Moon.
The outer senshi believed that if Saturn were to reawaken, the world would again be destroyed. For this reason, they set off to destroy Hotaru (inside which Saturn's conciousness resides) before Sailor Saturn could awaken within her. Their mission continued into the present time.
