Makoto was orphaned after her parents were killed in an aeroplane accident, since then she has had to fend for herself. Perhaps this is the reason for her somewhat ironic personality. She is physically strong, and a fighter (with typically "tomboyish" qualities), yet she cooks and cleans and enjoys other "feminine" activities.

Makoto first appears as a transfer student to Juuban Junior High (like Ami) because of troubles at her pervious school. However the other students feared her, having heard she had gotten into a fight at her old school. Usagi on the other hand befriended her when nobody else would.

As Sailor Jupiter, she joined the sailor team as the forth senshi. She is fiercely strong, brave, and often rushes headlong into danger. She is physically the strongest of the Inner Senshi, only rivalled by Sailor Uranus of the Outer Senshi. Makoto utilizes forces of lightning, and wood. Logic would explain that Jupiter is the Roman god of the heavens that controlled thunder, while the Japanese kanji for Jupiter means "Wood Star".
